Jewelry FAQs
From metals and diamond cuts to custom work and care — answers to the questions we're asked most. Have another? We'd love to talk it through in person.
Materials & Metals
What metals do you use for fine jewelry?+–
There are many options, and the metal is one of the most important choices for any piece. While silver is popular, it's a soft metal prone to tarnishing — not ideal for fine jewelry. We most often work in three metals:
Gold — timeless and classic. Gold is alloyed with metals such as silver, copper, nickel and zinc, and measured in karats (the proportion of pure gold). Choose yellow, white, or rose gold to suit your style.
Platinum — extremely strong and never tarnishes, making it a great choice for wedding bands and everyday jewelry. Often alloyed with copper and cobalt for added durability.
Titanium — the hardest natural metal: scratch-resistant, lightweight, hypoallergenic, and easy to color. Its one drawback is that it can't be resized, so it's less ideal for rings as finger size changes over time.
Diamonds & Gemstones
What are the most common diamond and gemstone cuts?+–
The most common cuts include Radiant, Marquise, Emerald, Princess, Oval, Asscher, Pear, Heart, and Cushion. We're happy to walk you through each one in person and help you decide what's right for you.
Can I choose my own diamond or gemstone?+–
Yes. We carry loose diamonds and gemstones, and we can custom-order exactly what you're looking for — always at wholesale prices.
Do you offer natural diamonds too, or only lab-grown?+–
Both. We offer sustainably and ethically sourced natural diamonds as well as lab-grown diamonds — so you can choose whichever suits your taste, values, and budget.
Every natural diamond we source comes from responsible, conflict-free supply chains, and we're glad to walk you through the differences in person.
What are lab-grown diamonds?+–
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — optically, chemically, and physically the same as natural diamonds. They're created in a laboratory by scientists, offering the same luxurious diamond at more flexible price points to fit any lifestyle.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?+–
They are. Lab-grown diamonds are made up of a single element, carbon, just like their natural counterparts, with the same optical and physical properties. Advanced testing and screening are needed to distinguish between the two.
What are the benefits of lab-grown diamonds?+–
Affordability — generally more affordable than natural diamonds. High quality — often greater purity than mined stones. Ethical production — created in controlled environments without the impacts of mining. Environmental sustainability — a significantly lower footprint. And guaranteed, conflict-free origins for true peace of mind.
Custom Jewelry & Services
Can you make custom jewelry?+–
Absolutely. While we carry an extensive collection, we can work with you to design the perfect, unique piece that matches your style.
Do you create your jewelry on site?+–
We have long-standing relationships with independent artisans off site — bench jewelers specializing in repair, resizing and fabrication; designers who create custom pieces and CAD drawings; and goldsmiths who bring your ideas to life in gold and other metals.
What other services do you offer?+–
Jewelry repair and repurposing — whether you need to fix a broken chain, replace a missing gemstone, create a new piece from a loose diamond, or give new life to an estate piece. We also offer ring re-sizing, worry-free cleaning and repair, and appraisals for insurance and peace of mind.
